Arnis De Canberra: A New Chapter in Filipino Martial Arts in the ACT

The spark that ignited the formation of Arnis De Canberra was a captivating Arnis demonstration held on June 9, 2024, in Canberra, Australia. Organised by the Philippines Australia Association of the ACT and Monaro region to commemorate Philippine Independence, the event showcased the dynamic and intricate movements of Filipino Martial Arts, Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali. Grand Master William Bernas Estocadas and Associate Professor Robert Parkes of the University of New Castle, along with the skilled Eskrima Academy students, delivered an awe-inspiring performance that captivated the audience.

Among those enthralled by the demonstration were Raul Ruiz and Boni David, committee members of the Filcom Sports Club. Inspired by the energy, discipline, and cultural significance of Arnis, they envisioned a new avenue in physical activity while fostering a sense of camaraderie and Filipino pride. Thus, Arnis De Canberra was born.

The primary objective of Arnis De Canberra is to promote fitness and well-being through the practice of Arnis. While the club acknowledges the inherent benefits of Arnis in self-defense, its focus is primarily on physical exercise and the development of confidence. Although Arnis De Canberra does not currently have a certified instructor on board, the committee is diligently acquiring Arnis training through online resources and sharing the knowledge gained with club members. It's important to emphasize that Arnis De Canberra is not a formal martial arts school but a social club where individuals can enjoy the physical and social aspects of Arnis.

Arnis De Canberra represents a burgeoning community of individuals passionate about Filipino culture and physical fitness. As the club continues to grow and develop, it has the potential to become a significant contributors to the Filipino-Australian community in Canberra.
